New Website – Your Action Needed!

This post should only be going to those of you who read the Free Kindle Books and Tips blog via an RSS feed or via email.  There have been some important changes that, unfortunately, require a little bit of action on your part (that’s the bad news), but that action should take you less than 30 seconds (that’s the good news).

What are the changes?  Well, I had the website moved to its own domain vs. the shared version I had on WordPress.  The WordPress version worked out great when I started this blog a few years ago, but with the breadth and size it has become now it was beyond time to move to a dedicated website and hosting solution.  You can check out the new website at http://www.fkbooksandtips.com

To continue receiving the updates via email or an RSS feed, here is what you need to do:

Updates via Email

Please click here or type in http://www.fkbooksandtips.com/subscribe into your computer’s web browser and enter your email address under the “Your email:” line-item  and click the “Subscribe” icon.

Once you do that, you will receive a confirmation email to the email address you just input on the web page: I am sending out a confirmation email to make sure no one is being spammed.  In the email, there is a link to click – once you click it, you will start receiving emails of the free Kindle book offers and tips to maximize the enjoyment of your Kindle.

Some of you may wonder why didn’t I just transfer all of the email addresses to the new site…the short answer is I could, but the emails would really look like &%# and all sorts of other bad things like text-only and summarized.  I would rather think you would like a better-formatted email.  I hope all of you will resubscribe, and I will probably lose a few of you, but for the long-term health of the blog it is necessary to resubscribe.

Updates via RSS Feed

If you have been receiving the blog via RSS feed, you will need to update the URL with the associated feed to http://feeds.feedburner.com/fkbooksandtips

That’s it!  How about checking out the new website at http://www.fkbooksandtips.com and let me know what you think?  My new email address is michael at fkbooksandtips dot com

Thanks!

Michael

Kindle Reset Instructions

I received four messages today about people not receiving the blog for a number of days on their Kindles; as most of the people who read this and my other blogs read them on their Kindles, I am sending this out to each of my blogs. I am going to set this message up to go out monthly: if you’ve seen it before and know what I’m talking about, or if you’re just plain ‘ole tired of seeing it don’t worry – I’ll be back with a new post soon.

Don’t have a Kindle? Well, you should get one! They range in price from $79 – $379 depending upon the number of bells and whistles you get. You can click here to give the kind of Kindle I use a look.

There seems to be a Kindle problem for a lot of folks – that is, what do you need to do if (a) this or any other blog or newspaper all of a sudden stops updating each day on the Kindle, and (b) you can see the blog or newspaper post in the to be downloaded list of the “Manage Your Kindle” section of the Amazon website and for some unexplained reason it doesn’t show up on your Kindle..

You will need to write this down, or try to memorize it, because if it happens to you I’m willing to bet you won’t remember unless you’ve reset your Kindle a few times!

If you would like to print this out, click here to read my post on the Free Kindle Books Plus a Few Other Tips blog to how to capture screen shots on your Kindle.

If this happens to you, you will need to reboot your Kindle. Here is how you do it:

  1. Click the “Home” button to get back to your home screen.
  2. Click the “Menu” button, and select “Settings.”
  3. You will see several options, but “reboot” is not one of those options. Press the “Menu” button again.
  4. You will have several options, but choose and click the “Restart” button.

Once you do that, it will take about 1-2 minutes to reboot. Make sure your wireless is on, and the Kindle will go look in the Amazon store to see what is pending to be downloaded and viola! You should be back in business. If you ever need to restart your Kindle, I hope this helps!

Based Upon Your Feedback…

I thought I would peck out a few things about my request for feedback on the formatting of the free book offers on the blog.  Based upon quite a few email and blog entry responses, I heard:

  • Keep it the way it has been (i.e., no changes).
  • Go to a summarized format where I just put the title, author, customer rating, genre, and a link.
  • Keep it the way it has been, but put something on the post indicating what the genre is.

I’m probably going to go with option #3 – if you read the blog on the web page, you’ll probably be saying “you’ve always done that.”  That’s true – if you read the blog on the web vs. your Kindle, for example, you will see the various genre categories you can click on to see more.

However, 90% of the folks who read this blog do so on their Kindles and they can’t see those categories.  So, in an effort to make it easier to review each day, I will have the name of the book, the author’s name, the customer rating (if there is one), a link to the book, and the book’s description.  However, in between the link to the book and the book’s description I will also tell you the genre of the book according to how it is listed at Amazon.  Sometimes there isn’t one listed on the Kindle page: if that happens, I will do my best to get it right (in other words, I am going to make a guess).

Please bear with me as we go forward, as I’ve basically been typing the same introduction for a few years now and I might forget here and there!

For all of you who replied back with your comments, I appreciate your feedback!

Regards,

Michael

The Variant Effect Free from Amazon Kindle Store

The Variant Effect by G. Wells Taylor is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and you can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/mPbuoA into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

VARION was a popular medication that could cure anything from Anxiety and Depression to Schizophrenia and Zoophagia. Everybody took it back in the day, because there were no side effects… …AT FIRST. By the time they learned about the Variant Effect it was too late.

The old building in a rundown part of Metro was a perfect place to find a body, but they wouldn’t have dragged Joe Borland out of retirement if it still had its skin. It’s been 20 years since Borland battled the Variant Effect, and 20 since he let his partner get skinned alive. Now both of them are ordered back into action to meet a terrifying new threat.

Another Penny Book in the Amazon Kindle Store

Wow, in terms of number of clicks the book I told you about yesterday that was just a penny was extremely popular: the book ranking went from the 97,000 range to #5 in the Amazon Kindle store.  In case you missed that post, click here or type in http://bit.ly/ktjpEY into your computer’s web browser.

Now, some of you may say I am going against the spirit of this “free” eBook blog by listing something that actually costs money.  I would agree with the purists on one hand, but on the other hand – and a valid point, I believe – you just can’t buy anything for a penny anymore, not since the piece of gum I used to buy from a bin from 7-11 as a kid a few decades ago.

So, I looked around the Amazon Kindle website and found another book in the Kindle format that is listed for just a penny called Love Springs / Prelude: Two Inspector Monde Tales of Strange and Terrible Adventures by John Booth.  You can try it out if you click here or type in http://amzn.to/kWVDjw into your computer’s web browser.  Let’s see if we can move this one up from its current ranking of #13,171.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Love Springs
A woman, a man, each searching for the other, fear etched in their eyes as Inspector Monde seeks to understand. Only he knows if the bridge will reveal their secrets.

Prelude
An invitation, a warning, a clue. An old case that still haunts Inspector Monde resurfaces and he suspects revenge. Even Cervantes and his kind flee the evil that postures and taunts and lures Inspector Monde to a place of such corruption that the unthinkable becomes real.

Inspector Monde walks the dark side of Paris where the supernatural can be found. Every police force has an Inspector Monde though they try to deny it. When the blood chills and the hairs on the back of the neck rise they send for him and don’t look too closely at what he does. For the Inspector does not particularly believe in the Law but will fight for Justice to his last breath.

From the Author:

Book 5 in a series of 7

Charles Monde is one of my favorite creations. The stories are set at the beginning of the sixties. Monde has been touched by death and has an affinity with ghosts. This is fortunate because the ghosts of Paris are often unaware of their status, can look and act like those of flesh and blood. They have a tendency to seek revenge.

If you like twisty, creepy little ghost stories then Monde should be right up your street.
Why not give him a go?

It’s Black Friday

I’m setting this up to go out at 7:00 a.m. Central time (my time zone).  It’s officially “Black Friday” and the Kindle 2 should be at $89 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific time, noon Eastern time – or about four hours from now.

That’s a heck of a deal – free 3G access, the whole shebang except for WiFi capability.  Compare that to $189 for a K3 with the 3G option, and I may replace my kids’ K1’s with one of these (those of you reading this who know my wife, please don’t tell her – you know who you are!).

The price should say $89, click here or type in http://tinyurl.com/kindlebf into your web browser!  If that doesn’t work, you can check out all of the Black Friday deals with this link: http://tinyurl.com/24bo7tm

Blog Page Popularity

One of the things I am able to do with my blog software is see what people click on, what are the most popular posts (in terms of page views), what search terms were used, etc.  No, for those of you thinking it, I cannot see your personal information!

The number of page views month-over-month have been increasing significantly, along the lines of 50% – 60% each month.  This doesn’t count the number of people who are subscribed to the blog via a Kindle subscription, which has been growing as well.  Seeing as how September will be ending any moment, I thought I would see what has been the most popular posts over the last quarter.

I was surprised by the results in some cases, not so much in others.  Excluding individual book titles over the last 3 months, here are the five most popular blog posts (defined as the most number of clicks / views) with a link to each in case you missed them.

Transferring Books to Your Kindleclick here

Actually, this one doesn’t surprise me as much; with the various free book offers from third party sites I have told you about, along with a link to this post on how to get those books from your computer to your Kindle, this one should be ranked fairly high.  The ironic thing is I put this one up as an eBook in the Amazon Kindle store on a whim at a sale price of 99 cents, just to see if anyone would purchase it (plus it only took about 20 minutes to do it) – I say it is ironic because it is a chapter in both my Free Kindle Books and How to Find Them and Kindle Tips, Tricks, and Shortcuts books, plus I post it as a blog post at least a few times per month and you get it for free.

If you haven’t bookmarked this post or printed it out, I suggest you do so now as one day you will be trolling around the Internet somewhere and see an eBook you want and download it to your computer.  When you do and are ready to read it on the Kindle, you won’t have to wait for the next time I post it!

Free Cookbooksclick here

This one surprised me.  When I posted the blog entry about a third party website offering 15 cookbooks for free, I didn’t think that many people would be interested.  I was wrong – I posted it in the middle of September and over 2,500 of you have hit that page in less than two weeks.  What’s for dinner tonight?

Check Out the New Kindle 3 Caseclick here

This was a short post related to the new leather Kindle 3 case with a built-in LED light that draws power from your Kindle.  As a side note, this is the case I have for my new K3, and the light feature is pretty good – so far, I’ve used it for a couple of hours at a time on a plane and reading in a hotel room that didn’t have that great of a lighting scheme in the room, without a noticeable decrease in the Kindle’s battery.

Converting PDF Files to the Kindle Formatclick here

Seeing as how the free cookbook post was #2, this one doesn’t surprise me – the cookbooks are all in PDF format.

Tricking Out a New or Existing Kindleclick here

I originally posted this list in January, then updated it in September due to the surge of new Kindle owners with the K3 release.  I’ll probably update it again a few times a year, the next time around Christmas when a lot of people will probably be opening up new Kindles as gifts (that makes me sound like one of the computer newspaper columnists who write about their wish list “tricked out” computer).  Who knows, Amazon may have yet a new version of the Kindle ready to go at Christmas – and no, I don’t have any inside scoop on that: it’s just a guess!

I’ll be back with a new free book offer soon!

Michael

Some Alternative Audio for Your Kindle

In a previous post (click here to see it), I told you how you can play music in MP3 format on your Kindle.  Did you realize you can also listen to books (audiobooks, that is) on your Kindle?  You can.  All you need to do is get the audiobook in MP3 format and put it into a folder just like you would with a music MP3.

For example, there are several young adult audiobooks being offered for free, a new one each week, if you point your web browser to www.audiobooksync.com – just be sure to go to the area “YA Literature Listeners Enter Here.”

Or, why not check out www.podiobooks.com for some more free material?

Could You Use Another $110 in Your Pocket?

Similar to what I posted about the price drop of the Kindle 2 earlier this week, you may be a little peeved if you just bought a Kindle DX in the last 30 days – or just yesterday – and they dropped the price $110 to $379.  Click here in case you missed the post from early this morning.

Go get your $110 back from Amazon.

Historically, Amazon has refunded the price difference between the old and new price – Call Amazon’s Kindle customer service department (1-866-321-8851) and explain how you are disappointed and paid the higher price.  If the follow precedent, Amazon should promptly refund you the difference between what you paid and the new price – if you bought it in the last 30 days.  If it has been over 30 days, try it anyway – you have nothing to lose and $110 to gain.

To me, that makes sense as you have the right to return it within 30 days.  If everyone did that, then ordered another one at the new price, Amazon would have a restocking inventory nightmare.

Book for Children Free Today from Amazon

Here’s one for kids to start the weekend: Swashbuckling Fantasy: 10 Thrilling Tales of Magical Adventure by a variety of authors, and it is free today from the Amazon Kindle store from Simon & Schuster.  Since there aren’t any physical pages I can’t tell you how long it is except guess – it’s over 1.3 meg in size, so it sounds like a lot of content or maybe a lot of pictures; who knows, the price is right!  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

Amazon Earnings Call Today

As I told you about in a post last week, today is Amazon’s earnings call.  They have received a lot of flack from analysts, the press, and competitors about not publicly releasing the number of Kindles sold.  In case you are interested in listening, the call is today at 2:00 p.m. Pacific time (5:00 p.m. Eastern time) to discuss first quarter earnings.  In addition to their results of operations for the quarter, hopefully they will give some guidance on the number of Kindles sold and the installed user base worldwide, as well as a forecast of things to come.

If you are interested in listening in to the conference call (no, you won’t be able to ask Jeff Bezos any questions), the audio and associated slides will be available via webcast if you point your web browser to http://www.amazon.com/ir

In case you are unable to attend the webcase but want to hear what they have to say, the audio and the slides will be available at the same location for three months after the call to listen to at your leisure.
